The British Library is set to make digital copies of 40,000 classic novels, historical accounts and poems that will be readily available for the Apple iPad tablet.
The British Library 19th Century Historical App, created in collaboration with software media firm Bibliolabs, offers iPad users a range of classic works by Mary Shelley, Charles Dickens, Daniel Defoe and many, many others as well as a fair few long-forgotten works, including Victorian travel writing, poetry and scientific texts.
"The online appetite for original historical content is huge and the library is delighted to be working with BiblioLabs to transform the accessibility and visibility of this remarkable collection of 19th century books," said Caroline Brazier, the British Library's director of scholarship and collections.
The British Library said that it could also launch the app on other mobile devices in future.
